While the far right rises almost everywhere, Zohran Mamdani and Berlin’s Die Linke have shown that the left can overcome the doom loop and win elections—if only it learns to move beyond bad habits.

Looking as far back as the formation of bourgeois society in the 19th century, Catherine Liu’s new book Traumatized examines how progressive politics, over time, privatized suffering and became trapped in victimhood, conflating personal trauma with political agency. (Read a book excerpt here.)

We’ll contextualize Liu’s thesis from two directions:

Based on her research on social movements in Berlin and the UK, Sarah Stein Lubrano explains how talking about politics has become largely toxic and useless—and why working together on small, shared community improvements is much more effective at changing political views.

Drawing on a rich tradition of political philosophy and her own family history, Lea Ypi argues that the left can still lay claim to universalist ideas—as long as they are capable of transforming individual experience into a shared political vision.

The event will be held in English. Moderated by BR editor Tobias Haberkorn.
